Charred Wood Finishes with a Laser: A Modern Take on Shou Sugi Ban

Shou Sugi Ban — the Japanese technique of charring wood to protect and beautify it — has become one of the most sought-after finishes in modern architecture and furniture design. Traditionally it's done with an open flame: dramatic, yes, but also hard to control, risky indoors, and nearly impossible to reproduce consistently across a batch of boards. A laser offers a different path to the same striking result: controlled carbonisation, with no fire in your workshop.

From rust removal to wood finishing

It may seem surprising that a machine built for stripping rust can also finish wood, but the underlying process is the same: precisely delivered laser energy transforming a surface layer. On steel, that energy vaporises oxide. On timber, at reduced power, it gently carbonises the surface — darkening the wood, raising the grain contrast and creating anything from a light antique tone to a deep charred look.

How the process works

The principles are simple, and they'll be familiar to anyone who has used a laser for cleaning:

  • Lower power, controlled passes. Wood needs far less energy than rust removal. Low-to-medium settings produce subtle antiqued tones; slower passes or repeated sweeps deepen the effect.
  • Keep the beam moving. Continuous, even motion is the key to a uniform finish and avoids hot spots.
  • Dry wood behaves best. Low moisture content gives an even, predictable char; damp timber burns unevenly.
  • Finish like any charred surface. After lasering, a light brushing removes loose carbon, and an oil or wax finish locks in the texture and colour.
  • Test first. Every species chars differently — pine, oak and larch each respond in their own way, so run a sample offcut before committing to a full panel.

Why choose a laser over a flame?

Control. Flame charring is fast but blunt — depth varies with every pass of the torch. Laser parameters are repeatable, which matters when you're producing a set of matching cabinet fronts or ten metres of wall panelling.

Safety. No open flame means no fire risk in the workshop and no gas torch handling. Smoke is modest and manageable with standard extraction. Laser safety still applies: proper eyewear and a controlled work area are non-negotiable.

Clean process. No chemicals, no stains, no pigments — the colour comes from the wood itself. For clients asking for natural, low-VOC finishes, that's a genuine selling point.

Selectivity. A laser can char one area and leave the neighbouring surface untouched — enabling patterns, borders and detail work that a flame simply cannot do.
